Abraxas Exhibit bursts with color, intricate detail

By Sara Graham, Staff Reporter

Self Portrait of Abraxas

Brilliant color and intricate detail abounded at the Federal Street Gallery in Milton, where Lewes native Abraxas debuted his collection Nov. 2. The young artist greeted guests and often heard sounds of people saying "wow" and "amazing" as they studied his work.

Abraxas' work "Gordon's Pond" ($22,600 for the original) was a stand-out at the show. A bright pink sky framed by blue-gray clouds was breathtaking to see. A great blue heron is almost camouflaged within the grassy patch of land, but looking at it closely the detail made it stand out.

"Millennial Night" an oil-on-linen, Abraxas' favorite medium, showed a brilliant spectrum of color over the last sunset of the 20th century. The work was so fantastic that it was printed on two bottles of wine by Nassau Valley Vineyards.

Somehow, Abraxas gave a horse human qualities in his work "Princess". The oil-on-linen showed the beatiful Clydesdale horse almost smiling and with a twinkle in her eye. At the same time, he captured the majesty and strong character of the horse standing tall.

His work "Look Out" depicting World War II watch towers along the beach was a stand out in the show. Lightening could be seen at a distance, but as the sun casts a dying light onto the tower, it gives a different dimension to the piece. The sunlight reflects the towers in puddles of ocean left by the high tide.

Abraxas also does portraits. In his work "Mrs. Moon" a Lewes Public Library figure, he captures her so well that it is almost like looking at a live person. The detail in her eyes, especially in the iris, makes the painting extraordinary.

"Along the Way" ($18,000) showed a Chesapeake Street Pathway. The sunrise is caught filtering through the trees. There are very obvious shadows, but the pathway itself is encapsulated by the light.

His oil-on-linen called "Windansea" ($26,000) blends the Southern California sky, sea ,and beach in a beautiful display of color. At least five different colors were reflected within the sea itself. The piece culminates with an amazing sunset.

"Rosario Beach" is a combination of the beach and the forest. Abraxas' depiction of Puget Sound captures in stunning detail the sand and pebbles as waves crash along a pattern of rock nearby. The forest and woods show a lush green landscape, and if one looks close enough, two deer stand staring out, watching the horizon.

Seemingly out of character, but just as wonderful as the other pieces, the work "Tiger" ($30,000) gives a close-up magnified view of a butterfly tasting daisy nectar. Although plainer, primary colors were used, the effect was just as striking. Abraxas blended a lighter blue with a more brilliant blue as the sky climbed the atmosphere.

The Abraxas exhibit is something art lovers will not want to miss. The display will continue through November 30th at the Federal Street Gallery, 108 Federal Street in Milton. Gallery hours are from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.. For more information, call (302) 684-1055.
